Aubrey Beardsley
Being an English illustrator and writer, Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898) is often called as the representative of Art Nouveau and poster styles. His designs are distinctive and independent from any other artists in that they often contain simple graceful lines in back ink, abstract floral motifs, and high contrast between white and black space, and between high detail and stark bareness.
At the age of 21, Beardsley used new technology printer to produce the drawings for Oscar Wilde’s play Salome (Figure 1). The technique that Beardsley used for this artwork was the line-block printing process. Even though this process can only reproduce areas of black and white, Beardsley kept the limitations of this method in mind when creating his work. Due to this limitation, he could add much more simplicity in his work which follows the role of Art Nouveau. He used one of technological tool: line-block printing in his work to be affordable and available to everyone that he could gain his reputation among all people
