Arts and Crafts Movement

It Is almost undeniable that many design movements have started to form through industrial revolution. The Arts and Crafts Movement was the start of a transition from the traditional manufactured Victorian designs to handcrafted simple craftsmanship. Originated in England around 1999, this new movement was a reaction to the Industrial revolution which was eliminating craftsmanship to quantity; hand tools were replaced by machines. Artists from this movement relied much on the past medieval designs and implied the importance of an individual’s responsibility of expression that can never be replaced by machines. The Arts and Crafts Movement was hugely influenced by the Gothic revival of the first half of the 19th century by reemploying the influences of the Middle Ages architecture and cathedrals. In addition, medieval craftsmen’s traditional skills and materials were employed in the Arts and Crafts Movement. In the Arts and Crafts Movement, the use of technology was strongly condemned and revival of traditional craftsmanship, materials and designs was welcomed.
